Ice Rescue Seminar

Wilderness Safety Systems offers a one
and three day Ice Safety Workshops. The academic portion of the curriculum
is three hours in the morning and is delivered from a PowerPoint presentation.
Skills are demonstrated and practiced on the ice in the afternoon.
Course Description:
The purpose of the course is to introduce a safety standard for working
and pursuing recreation on the ice. Courses run for the MNR offices
assists employees/contractees of the MNR interpret the "Working
on Ice Safety Policy" (I don’t even understand what this
means... probably: Courses run for the MNR offices will assist employees
and contractors of the MNR in interpreting the “Working on Ice
Safety Policy”). Principles of the course can be applied to all
recreational ice activities such as Ice Fishing and Snowmobiling.

Course Highlights:
- No Prerequisites
- Assessment and treatment of Hypothermia/Cold Water Immersion
- Identification of different structures of ice
- Practicing basic rescue skills
- Ice Sampling Workshop
- Optional Full-immersion Experience
Sample 1-Day Course Outline:
Morning:
0.25 Hours - Introductions
2.45 Hours - Powerpoint Presentation
- Recognition, prevention and treatment of Hypothermia
- Locally established & practiced emergency response plan
- Requirements to comply with the MNR WOI Policy
- Ice thickness and strength relative to structure and colour
- Hazard identification and avoidance
- Specific guidelines for working on ice
Afternoon:
4.00 Hours - Demonstration and practicing of acquired skills
- Hypothermia Wrap
- Ice thickness sampling techniques
- One and two person immersion rescue
- Throwing lines to victims
- Creating reliable ice anchors using ice screws
- Towing strategies for submerged sleds and ice huts
- Self Rescue skills and immersion skills
- Optional full immersion experience

Additional Course Information
Our instructors will come to your facility to deliver the workshop.
There is a minimum requirement of 12 people per workshop.
Cost is $100.00 per person plus Instructor's Expenses.
