SRTA is taught over three days with four to six hours of classroom
followed by two and one-half days of hands-on skill development. There
is a mock night river rescue scenario on the second or third evening.
This night problem begins at dark and lasts until its successful conclusion.
Topics covered include pre-planning; rescue and recovery management;
specific problems which arise with floods; rescue from class IV-VI
whitewater; raising/lowering systems; stokes litter management; cliff
picket anchors, "A" frames, tripod setups; a night mock Search
and Rescue (SAR) problem; and, many other subjects.
Equipment requirements:
- full wetsuit or drysuit
- lightweight water or kayak helmet
- USCG Type III or V approved lifejacket/PFD
- hiking or work boots
- leather gloves
- waterproof flashlight or headlamp
- whistle
Prerequisites:
- 18 years of age or older
- adequate health insurance coverage
- basic swimming ability
- being in good physical condition
- completion of SRT1 within the previous 3 years
- if working toward meeting the requirements for the NFPA 1670 Standard
for the areas of water and rope a certificate from a recognized technical
rope rescue program
